Raising Practices

About our dogs' health:

Each one of our dogs receives supplements and vitamins daily. Our dams all receive prenatal vitamins once they come in heat until the birth of puppies on top of their supplements. Once puppies are born, we give post natal vitamins until about a week after weaning. This helps ensure the best pregnancy, development, and growth of the puppies. This also ensures mom has all the nutrients she needs. We allow our dams to free feed once bred until puppies are weaned. They never go without access to food or water during this crucial time. We love all our dogs and always want to ensure they have everything they need to help them live their best, healthiest, longest lives! If you'd like to learn more about having a healthy lifestyle for your pooch, reach out and we'd love to point you in the right direction!!

Timeline:

Day 1 We help our Dams with the birthing process, and handle the puppies from the instant they are born.

Days 2-5 Our puppies go to the vet for their dew-claw removal. We remove dew claws to ensure a happier future for them. If a dew claw gets infected, or rips which is common, then the dog must be put under anesthesia to safely remove.

Days 3-15 Early Neurological Stimulation

Week 4   First Puppy Visit: Puppy choices will be determined on a first-come, first-served basis upon receipt of deposit. If a puppy of your preference is not born, your deposit will be transferred to another litter. The first family visit for puppy selection will occur at four weeks of age. Families will be allowed to reserve a one-hour time slot to visit with the puppies and make their selections. This process will occur in the order that deposits were received. Any family unable to visit our farm in person will be allowed time over the phone, video chat, and provided photos to help determine their puppy pick. Mountain Spring Doodles reserves the right to the first pick of every litter. In the event we forgo our pick, each family will rise one rank in the pick list You will also recieve a Tips and Tricks packet to ensure you have all you need for your puppy transition to be smooth.

Week 4- 4 1/2  We move the puppies to their own room where they will be frequently visited by mom, but no longer constantly with her. They will be introuced to small dog cages, opened, with beds inside to promote cage sleeping. They will have access to these cages until they venture to their new homes. They will have access to a water bowl as well to get them in the habit and used to drinking out of a bowl.

Week 4-5 Weather Permitting. The puppies will have their first outside venture to get used to the grass and being in the outdoors. They will experience our adult dogs through the cage and they will never be left unattended outside of the cage.

Week 4 1/2 (or when they begin jumping regularly) We begin the "Sitting Game".  We will have the puppies inside their cage and those who sit will get picked up and loved on, those that jump will be ignored. Multiple jumps and we will correct down off the cage, repeat "sit" and when puppy sits, pick up and give much positive attention to them. This encouages them to sit by rewarding them with love and scratches.  We have found when families only pick their pups up when they sit and say "good sit" or an adequate phrase chosen to use for "sit".  The pup learns the command much quicker, through repetition, and knows no other way which helps lead to a smoother transition into their new homes.

Week 5- 5 1/2 We begin weaning process. We keep our pups with their mother's as long as possible. They nurse until around 5 1/2 weeks old. Our Dam's all love being moms and would nurse the puppies indefinitely if they could.  Once we start the weaning process puppies will be fed outside (weather permitting) and allowed to use the bathroom outside.

Week 6 Puppies are eating watered-down hard food and regularly venturing outside to use the bathroom. They have been introduced to toys and

Weeks 6-8 are crucial for socialization.  The puppies all learn from one another and really begin to understand the puppy process and what is expected of them by watching our other dogs. When puppies venture to their new homes too soon, they miss out on this key period. We do not allow our puppies to go home before they are AT LEAST 8 weeks old.

Week 6 1/2- 7  They are being socialized, individually, with our adult dogs, supervised only. By this time they have been socialized with kids and people. They are used to loud noises, barking, kids hooting and hollering, tv noises, banging, and any regular household noises they may come across. They have by this time heard gun shots, thunderstorms, vacuum and many other loud and noisy thing. They have been bathed multiple times, getting used to the routine of regular baths and grooming. We play with their feet as we did during ENS to help not be shy when clipping their nails.

Week 7 1/2 Puppies will visit vet for final check up before they go home. This will include a final Deworming, 1st round of vaccines, full vet check over, microchip inserted.
