DIATOMACEOUS EARTH

​

While it's more common to use Diatomaceous Earth as a flea prevention, many people have added small amounts of DE to their pet's diet. There a numerous benefits a pet can receive from a consistent dosage of DE. Pet owners who have given their pets DE have found their pet has an improved coat, appetite, metabolism, and digestion. DE is largely made up of amorphous silica, but it also contains calcium, magnesium, titanium dioxide, gallium, sodium and other trace minerals. Keep in mind that there are different grades of diatomaceous earth, so make sure you purchase food grade diatomaceous earth for your pet.

Instructions:

1. Make sure that you are using food grade DE. Only food grade DE safe for pets. Other types of DE are not safe for humans or animals.

2. Determine your dog's size:

   • Small Dogs and Puppies: ½ tsp of food grade DE

   • Dogs (<50 lbs) 1 tsp of food grade DE

   • Dogs (50-100 lbs) 1 tbsp of food grade DE

   • Dogs (>100 lbs) 2 tbsp of food grade DE

   • For puppies, we recommend you hold off on adding DE to their diet until they move to solid food.

3. ​​The type of food you are giving your dog will also affect the way to incorporate diatomaceous earth.

   • Wet Food: Remove the food from the can and add it to the dish. Then add the appropriate dose of DE and mix in.

   • Dry Food: There are 2 methods for adding DE to your dog's food.

     • Method 1: One and Done. This method also helps deter insects that may be infesting your pet's food supply (ants, weevils, beetles, flies). Take note of the number of servings in the bag of dog food. Multiply the appropriate DE dosage by the number of servings. Add that amount of DE to the bag of dog food and shake the bag to distribute it evenly. The DE will absorb the scent of the dog food and be almost indistinguishable from it allowing your dog to enjoy their food. Repeat method 1 with every new bag of dog food.

     • Method 2: Damp Approach. Mix the dosage of DE with a quarter cup of water. Pour the mixture over your dog's dry food coating most of it.

    Apple Cider Vinegar Method for Yeast in Ears *** WORKS VERY WELL***

Also you can use the apple cider vinegar method for yeast infections in ears:

 

MAKE SURE TO do a spot test first, especially if this is the first time your dog’s body is exposed to vinegar. While rare, some dogs may have skin that is sensitive to the chemical in the apple cider vinegar.

 

 

First, mix the apple cider vinegar with some warm olive oil at a ratio of 50/50. We don’t use water because it may feed the yeast infection if it isn’t properly wiped out from the dog’s ear canal. Next, dip a cotton swab into the mixture and gently wipe the dog’s ear while paying close attention to the base. Be sure to use different cotton swabs per ear to prevent the infection from spreading.

MISC. ITEMS

 

1. Hands On Grooming Gloves. Helps to reduce mats, get out dirt and works awesome with doodle hair!

2. Paw Plunger. Portable dog paw washer. Removes mud, dirt, salt, sand & more from your pet’s paws and lower legs after walks and play or activity. Keep dirty paws out of your home and off your floors, carpet, furniture and car. There are many different brands and variations, but we would definitely recommend one that has bristles on the inside.  We have had one before that did not have the bristles and it did not work as well.

3. Fresh Breath foam is awesome for bad breath. It eliminates it almost immediately lasting for a few hours.

4. Vet's Best Aches and Pains is a good thing to have on hand for any thing they come across that bothers them.

5. Vet's Best Ear Wash and Dry is great for stinky ears, for using after baths or water activities. It helps to eliminate moisture and has a great all natural smell that gets rid of those stinky ears!

6. Vetericyn is also a great product to have on hand for any of those cuts or scrapes, safe to lick!

7. When travelling with your pet it is always good to have a travelling food and water bowl to be prepared for anything. We always keep a "dog bag" in each vehicle with a leash, collar, treats, unopened water bottle, water and food bowl.
